Left to our own devices: Everybody’s doing it!

Jennifer deGuzman of SLG Publishing contrasts the difficulty of putting comics on the Kindle (lots of extra formatting required) with the ease of publishing on iPhones. That’s significant because digital isn’t a big part of their revenue stream, just something they know is going to be big eventually.

On the other hand, David Gallaher and Steve Ellis created Box 13 specifically for the iPhone, and they have a interesting conversation about it at Comic Book Resources. The story is based on an old radio series but has this interesting twist:

Gallaher said “Box 13″ stems from a hospital stay he experienced several years ago. “On Aug. 26, 2004, I was hospitalized for a period of several weeks due to problems related to a previously undiagnosed epilepsy condition,” the writer told CBR. “In an instant, my life changed dramatically. While I was at NYU Hospital, I also began to experience a series of bizarre coincidences and strange circumstances, which eventually became the thematic foundation for the piece.”

If you haven’t caught this already, check it out: David Brothers calls bullshit on Tyrese Gibbons for his claim that Mayhem is “the first-ever digital comic book [on iTunes].” Sure, and I invented the telephone. Plus the comic doesn’t seem to be very good, and Brothers provides a solicit and a sample of the art to prove his point.

Manga University is putting its books on the iPhone/iPod Touch. And they are using Panelfly.

Seven Seas is putting its manga on the Kindle, which means they will be readable on the iPod Touch as well, using the Kindle app. And they are pricing their books at $3.50 a volume, which they claim is the best price going.

Devils Due is using comiXology’s Comics app to put its comics on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Nice job on the site! Also, that’s very interesting about Seven Season on the Kindle. Man, I wish they had a color Kindle!

Added you to my RSS. Congrats on the site. Looking forward to more.

I’m enjoying Comixology’s free Comics App, but I’m still holding out for a program that will give me web-comics on my computer, nice and big, instead of teensy-tiny iPhone-sized, whether that be iTunes or something iTunes-esque like the hopefully-still-coming Longbox Digital or something else I haven’t heard about yet.
