Svet returns to her roots; Lady Action online

SvetSvetlana Chmakova, who was a webcomics creator before hitting it big with the print comics Dramacon and Nightschool, is resuming work on her early webcomic Chasing Rainbows, which is hosted on the Girlamatic site. They will kick off with a podcast interview with Svet; watch for updates later this week.

The folks at Captain Action enterprises are putting Lady Action Special #1 online as a free PDF until December 22. The print edition goes on sale (for $4) on December 23; after that, the PDF will cost you a dollar. Oddly, although the PDF is hosted by the iPhone comics site Panelfly, it’s not an iPhone comic. They are offering an iPhone version as well! Johanna Draper Carlson has links and commentary at Comics Worth Reading.

Harlequin manga are an odd hybrid—American romance novels that were made into manga in Japan, and then translated into English for an American audience. Dark Horse originally published the English editions (in passionate pink and purple ink) but for some reason they didn’t sell. Now Digital Manga (which, despite its name, is chiefly a print publisher of yaoi manga) has picked them up and is publishing them on its website, eManga. Digital has a rent-to-own system; it’s about two dollars to read the comic, and if you pay to read it a second time, you get unlimited access (but no download). At the Manga Maniac Cafe, Julie Opipari reviews two of the early releases, Prisoner of the Tower and Sale or Return Bride.

    Hi Brigid-
Thanks so much for running the story on our Lady Action Special, and our current Sneak-A-Peek promotion. As noted, we’re trying something a bit unorthodox: we’re giving away the entire comic online before it’s on store shelves. Once on sale, then we’ll start charging online for it. However, we thought this would be a great way for fans to give the comic (and our whole Captain Action series) a try.
One minor correction – while we are primarily paper/floppy comics- this offer does provide an iPhone comic. Fans can also download a PDF, if they prefer.
Look forward to hearing what you think of it all!
    Thanks again,
    Ed

$2 to read the comic and then another $2 for permanent reading for Digital Manga pdfs? That’s interesting although I wonder if they’ve tested that extra $2 out. I mean, I think people would bite more easily for $1 more – but perhaps there’s little difference between $1 and $2 for that audience. I’d like to see how that works out.
